环甲膜切开术是在环状软骨与甲状腺软骨之间，穿过皮肤与环甲膜，建立紧急气道，以挽救危及生命的呼吸道阻塞（如异物、血管性水肿或严重颜面创伤）。环甲膜切开术大多是在经气管插管不可能或有禁忌证的情况下，建立呼吸道的最后手段。进行环甲膜切开术比标准气管切开术更快与容易，施行时不需要调整颈部位置，并发症也较少。

不过环甲膜切开术只是危急时拯救生命的紧急与临时手段，以争取时间与机会，建立安全而稳定的呼吸道。
